Buying power of R$1 in 2012

This chart shows a calculation of buying power equivalence for R$1 in 2012 (price index tracking began in 1979).

For example, if you started with R$1, you would need to end with R$2.14 in order to "adjust" for inflation (sometimes refered to as "beating inflation").

When R$1 is equivalent to R$2.14 over time, that means that the "real value" of a single Brazilian real decreases over time. In other words, a real will pay for fewer items at the store.

This effect explains how inflation erodes the value of a real over time. By calculating the value in 2012 dollars, the chart below shows how R$1 is worth less over 14 years.

According to the OECD and the World Bank, each of these BRL amounts below is equal in terms of what it could buy at the time:

How to calculate inflation rate for R$1 since 2012

Our calculations use the following inflation rate formula to calculate the change in value between 2012 and today:

CPI todayCPI in 2012
×
2012 BRL value
=
Today's value

Then plug in historical CPI values. The Brazilian CPI was 81.21951 in the year 2012 and 173.5384 in 2026:

173.538481.21951
×
R$1
=
R$2.14

R$1 in 2012 has the same "purchasing power" or "buying power" as R$2.14 in 2026.

To get the total inflation rate for the 14 years between 2012 and 2026, we use the following formula:

CPI in 2026 - CPI in 2012CPI in 2012
×
100
=
Cumulative inflation rate (14 years)

Plugging in the values to this equation, we get:

173.5384 - 81.2195181.21951
×
100
=
114%
